BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College men's and women's swimming opened their 2013-14 season on Saturday, hosting Cumberlands (Ky.) and St. Catharine (Ky.) at Stivers Aquatic Center. 

Overall, Cumberlands bested the Union men's (134-70) and women's teams (118-79) in dual meet action, while the Union men (134-0) and women (131-28) swept past St. Catharine. Individually, Union posted 17 NAIA National Qualifying marks in the competition. 

"It was a hard fought swim meet," said head coach Rafael Forti. "It was great to open our season against a very strong opponent in order to see exactly where we currently are. It is in meets like this that you obtain the best out of all swimmers, from all teams. Now it is time to go back to the drawing board so we can continue improving. I am very excited for what comes ahead for our group this season."

For the Union women, things got off to a quick start in the 200-medley relay, where the Bulldogs were victorious in an "A" cut time of 1:51.59. 

Individually, senior Kasey McCormick led the way, hitting "A" cuts in two events, the 400-IM (4:58.61) and the 200-breast (2:33.26), winning the latter event. Meanwhile, junior Callie Harrigan posted an "A" cut in the 200-free (1:58.71), winning the event, and a "B" cut in the 50-free spilt of the 100-free. Harrigan was also victorious in the 100-free in an "A" cut time of 54.35.

Elsewhere, Anna Kotliarova posted a 100-free "A" cut after pacing the 400-free relay team in the final event of the evening, (the Bulldogs hit the wall in 3:53.42 to record an "A" cut), then a "B" cut in the 50-free spilt of the 100-free. Tanya Eustrom posted a "B" cut in the 50-free (26.55), while Eliska Melisharova also had a "B" cut in the 200-back, finishing in 2:18.03. Rounding out the individual cuts on the evening for the women's squad was Kellianne Holck, who had a "B" cut in the 500-free (5:32.64).

For the men, they also got off to a great start in the meet in their portion of the 200-medley relay, hitting the wall in 1:36.16 to record their first "A" cut of the evening.

On the individual end, Bradley Moore had a strong evening, posting "A" cuts in both the 200-free (1:46.82) and 500-free (4:44.99) to capture both events for the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Jose Jesus Morales had an "A" cut in the 400-IM with a time of 4:19.37, and Vinicius Rossi also posted an "A" cut in the 200-breast, hitting the wall in 2:13.78. Rounding out the top indviduals on the men's side was Lucas Lucena, who captured the 200-back in an "A" cut time of 2:00.20.

The Bulldogs ended the evening posting their final national qualifying cut in the 400-free relay, finishing in 3:28.46 to record an "A" cut. 

Union returns to the pool on Saturday, Nov. 2, as they travel to Asbury (Ky.) for a dual meet. Action gets underway at 1 p.m.
