WEST POINT, Ga. - A goal by Point (Ga.) with 51 seconds remaining in regulation sunk the Union College men's soccer team on Tuesday, as the Bulldogs dropped a tough 2-1 decision on the road in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
With the loss, Union fell to 6-7-2 overall, 2-5 in the AAC, while Point improved to 7-9-1 overall with the win. 4-4-1 in the AAC.
In the opening half, Union came out of the gates and scored a goal, as Alex Smith put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 in the fifth minute. The goal was Smith's team-leading ninth of the season and gave Union an early lead.
The score remained that way through the rest of the half, and into intermission. In the second half, Point was much more aggressive on the attack, taking 12 total shots (compared to just three in the first half). The Skyhawks finally cashed in on a chance in the 69th minute, as a Phillip Pressgrove goal knotted the match up at 1-1.
It appeared the match would head to overtime, as the score remained 1-1 with a minute to play. However, Pressgrove scored his second goal of the day in the 89th minute to give the host Skyhawks the thrilling one-goal victory.
Overall, Point outshot Union 15-13 in the contest, and held a 6-4 edge on corner kicks. In goal, Union's CJ Hopkins made four saves, all of which came in the second half.
The Bulldogs look to bounce back on Saturday, hosting St. Andrews (N.C.) in an AAC match at Bulldog Field. Things get underway at 3:15 p.m.
