DAYTON, Tenn. - The Union volleyball team put up a valiant effort but came up short, losing to host Bryan (Tenn.) 3-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Saturday.
Although swept, the Bulldogs were in each set as the Lady Lions won 25-23, 25-22, 25-22.
"We fought hard all day but came up just short each time," said Union coach Jeremy Wise. "We just need to focus and execute at the end of matches, especially with a hostile crowd. The good thing is the difference between us and the top team in the conference is just a matter of inches, and we still get to play them in our gym before the conference tournament."
The Bulldogs held the lead in each set, even owning an 18-11 edge in the opening frame. However, the Lady Lions rallied back and closed out for the win each time.
The loss snaps Union's five-match win streak as it is now 19-7 overall and 12-3 in conference play. Bryan improves to 28-1 overall and 17-0 in the AAC.
The two teams meet again next Saturday in Barbourville at 4 p.m.
Paige Moore led Union with nine kills with Caity Merritt adding eight. Ana Calaza recorded 23 digs.
For Bryan, Kara Stamper posted a match-high 11 kills, while Carolyn Evans followed with 10.
Union returns to action Tuesday when it plays at Milligan (Tenn.). The AAC match is set to start at 6:30 p.m.
