BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union volleyball team celebrated 'Senior Night' in grand style as the Bulldogs posted a convincing 3-0, Appalachian Athletic Conference sweep over visiting Truett-McConnell (Ga.) on Friday.
Union had little problem in collecting its 21st win of the season as it rolled to the 25-11, 25-13, 25-7 decision. The Bulldogs are now 21-7 overall and 14-3 in the AAC.
The Lady Bears are now 5-20 overall and 0-18 in conference play.
The Bulldogs' four seniors each had solid games, but Caity Merritt shined the brightest with 17 kills in hitting .842 on the night, committing only one attack error in 19 total attacks. She also had six digs and one ace.
Senior Karina Ramos notched four kills, four digs, an ace and a solo block, while senior Erin Porter had two kills, an ace and a block assist. Senior Linsey Ellis posted three digs and an assist.
Union dominated play all evening as it never trailed in any of the sets. The Bulldogs led by as much as 15 in the first frame en route to the 25-11 win. It was much of the same in the second set with Union leading by as much as 15 in recording the 25-13 decision. In the third set, the Bulldogs polished off the Lady Bears with a 25-7 win for the sweep.
The Bulldogs posted a .481 hitting percentage with 43 kills and six errors in 77 attacks. Union also had 14 service aces.
Heather Fields recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 27 assists and 10 digs. She also had five aces and five kills. Ana Calaza posted 16 digs.
By the Numbers
- The 14 aces are the second most by Union this season. Union had 15 on Sept. 14 against Brescia (Ky.).
- With 5.0 total blocks, Union has 199.5 on the season.
- Merritt now has a career-high 342 kills on the season. She has 853 for her career.
- Fields went over the 800-assist mark for the season as she now has 823.
Union is back in action on Saturday as it will host AAC rivals Reinhardt (Ga.) at 1 p.m. and Bryan (Tenn.) at 4 p.m.
