BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Montreat's Lewis Jones converted a penalty kick in the 57th minute, breaking a scoreless tie, and lifting Montreat to a 1-0 victory over the Union College men's soccer team on Saturday at Bulldog Field. The match was the 2013 regular season finale for both teams.
With the loss, Union ends the regular season with a 7-8-3 overall mark, 2-6-1 in the AAC, while Montreat goes to 7-7-2 with the win, 5-4 in the AAC.
In the first half, Union had several chances to score, but failed to cash in. Senior Jonathan Watson attacked early with a shot on goal within the first two minutes, and Callum Tychowski did the same for the Bulldogs at the 17-minute mark. However, each time, Montreat goalkeeper Lucas Carvalho earned a save, keeping the match scoreless.
After controlling the match in the first half, the tide changed in the second half, as Montreat took control, outshooting Union 12-6. After a penalty in the box on the Bulldogs, Jones finally gave the Cavaliers the lead with his successful penalty kick early in the half.
Union was kept alive for the rest of the match by goalie Juan Gallegos, who made five saves in the period. But, Union failed to score, as Carvalho earned the shutout victory for the Cavaliers.
Overall, Montreat outshot Union in the match, 16-13, while Union held an advantage on corner kicks, 8-2. Gallegos ended the night making six saves in a losing effort, while Carvalho made five saves in the victory.
Union will open the 2013 AAC Tournament on the road on Wednesday, traveling to Milligan (Tenn.) Time for the match has yet to be determined. Stayed tuned to UCBulldogs.com for more information as it becomes available.
