DAYTON, Tenn. - Union College's Helen Weber scored the game-winner in the 70th minute, as the Bulldogs bested Bryan (Tenn.), 1-0, in Appalachian Athletic Conference women's soccer action on Saturday evening.
With the win., Union ends their 2013 regular season with a 6-10 overall mark, 5-5 in the AAC. With the loss, Bryan ends the year 6-10-1, 1-8-1 in the AAC.
In the first half, Union controlled the match, outshooting Bryan by a wide 13-5 advantage. However, the Bulldogs failed to get a shot past Bryan goalie Stephanie Gagnon, who made six saves in the period. For the Bulldogs, Kendall Ellington was just as impressive in the first stanza, making four saves.
In the second half, things calmed down on the attack for both teams, but Union continued to get turned away. Finally with 20 minutes remaining in regulation, Weber broke the scoreless tie with her eventual game-winner (her sixth goal of the year). Teammate Sara Valenzuela earned an assist on the play, which lifted Union to a one-score lead.
From there, the Bulldogs hung on, as Ellington made three more saves to preserve the one-score victory on the road.
Overall, Union outshot Bryan in the match by a 21-11 margin, while Bryan held a 5-0 edge on corner kicks.
The Bulldogs open the 2013 AAC Tournament on Tuesday and will host a match at Burch/Nau Field at 2 p.m. As the seventh seed, the Bulldogs will entertain this same Bryan team, who is the 10th seed in the tournament.
