BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College's Aline Dalmedico scored three goals, leading the seventh-seeded Bulldogs to a 4-0 victory over 10th-seed Bryan (Tenn.) in the Opening Round of the 2013 Appalachian Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament on Tuesday at Burch/Nau Field
With the victory, Union improved to 7-10 on the year, while Bryan ends the 2013 season with a 6-11-1 overall mark.
From the start of the match, Union was the aggressor, firing multiple shots on goal. Finally, in the 15th minute, the Bulldogs cashed in, as Helen Weber scored to make it a 1-0 match. Dalmedico earned an assist on the play, after sending a through ball right to Weber at the top of the box.
Union went up 2-0 in the 41st minute on Dalmedico's first goal, a shot the junior took from just inside the box. Jessica Perkins set up the play with another nice through ball, giving the Bulldogs the 2-0 advantage heading into the locker room for intermission.
It was more of the same in the second half, as Dalmedico single-handily put the match away with a pair of goals.
Her first came in the 50th minute on a highlight reel shot that was bent into the net from the near side, while her second came in the 66th minute. The two unassisted scores gave the Bulldogs an insurmountable four-goal lead.
From there, Union coasted, as the Bulldogs won their fourth match in-a-row, and second over Bryan in the last four days to advance in the AAC Tournament.
Overall, Union dominated in the shots department, taking 22 on the day, compared to just four for Bryan. Both teams took a corner shot in the contest, while Union goalie Kendall Ellington made her lone save on the day in the second half.
By the Numbers
- Dalmedico's hat trick was her third of the 2013 season, as she accomplished the feat against Campbellsville (Aug. 28) and Truett-McConnell (Sept. 10) earlier in the season. She has now scored 17 of Union's 31 goals on the year.
- Weber scored her seventh goal of the season in the first half and her third in as many matches. All three goals were game-winners, as well.
- After starting the year 1-7, Union has gone 6-3 in their last nine matches.
- Union won their first match in the AAC Tournament for the fifth straight season today. Their last loss in an opening match came in the 2008 Quarterfinals at Tennessee Wesleyan.
The Bulldogs hit the road to take on second-seeded Montreat (N.C.) in the Quarterfinals of the AAC Tournament on Saturday. Things get underway at 12 p.m.
