MONTREAT, N.C. - Montreat's (N.C.) Evan Cain scored the game-winner three minutes into overtime, as the second-seeded Cavaliers upended the seventh-seeded Union College women's soccer team, 2-1, in the Quarterfinals of the 2013 Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday.
With the loss, Union ends their 2013 season with a 7-11 overall mark, while Montreat moved to 12-6 on the year, and onto the Semifinals of the AAC Tournament with the victory.
Late in the first half, Montreat broke a scoreless tie with a goal, as Chloe McCleary-Strong scored in the 38th minute to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 halftime lead.
That lead held through the second half and into the final moments of the match, in part due to a valiant effort by Union goalie Kendall Ellington, who made 15 total saves in regulation (seven in the first half, eight in the second half).
Finally, in the 86th minute, Aline Dalmedico got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a goal, tying the match at 1-1 and sending it to extra frames in the process. Senior Danielle Gilbert recorded an assist on the play, as Dalmedico scored her 18th goal of the season.
In the overtime, however, Montreat won the match on the Cain golden goal in the 93rd minute, as the Cavaliers finally got a shot on goal past Ellington.
Overall, Montreat had a wide advantage on shots over Union at 36-11 and in corner kicks, 7-2. Ellington's 15 save performance was a season-high for the freshman.
