DAYTON, Tenn. - A goal by Bryan's (Tenn.) Daniel Branley in the second overtime lifted the top-seeded Lions to a 1-0 victory over 10th-seeded Union on Saturday evening in the Quarterfinals of the 2013 Appalachian Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament.
With the loss, Union ends the 2013 season with a 8-9-3 mark, while Bryan moved to 13-3 with the victory and on to the Semifnals of the AAC Tournament next weekend.
"In my 12 seasons as a head coach at Union, I've never been involved in a more passionate game" said head coach Tyler Brock. "It was an unbelievable game. Our players left everything on the field, my heart hurts for them."
Through 90 minutes of action, both Union and Bryan had taken 14 shots on the evening. However, in net, Union's Juan Gallegos stopped six shots (two in the first half and four in the second half), while Bryan's Josh Oldroyd made three saves in regulation. The strong play by both keepers kept the match scoreless, sending it into overtime in the process.
In the first overtime, Union took two shots, but failed to get one into the net. As the match entered the second overtime, Union took two more shots, one of which was on goal, but was saved by Oldroyd.
Things came to a head with 3:09 left in the second overtime, as Bryan won the match after Stephen Millage sent a free kick into the box that Branley finished to win the match for the Lions.
Overall, Bryan outshot Union in the match 20-14 and held a 3-2 edge on corner kicks. Gallegos kept the Bulldogs in it all night long with his six save performance, while forward Alex Smith led Union in the shot department, taking four on the night (two of which were on goal).
