KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Appalachian Athletic Conference announced the 2013 Volleyball All-Conference Team on Wednesday at the awards banquet at the MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort & Convention Center, and Union's Ana Calaza is the AAC Libero of the Year. In all, three Bulldogs made the All-AAC First Team with another making the All-Freshmen Team.
Joining Calaza from Union on the All-AAC First Team are Paige Moore and Caity Merritt. Meanwhile, Julia Edmonds landed on the All-Freshmen Team.
Calaza, a sophomore from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, led the league in digs and digs per set with 687 digs and 5.73 digs per set, ranking eighth in the NAIA in digs per set. She had 36 service aces as well. During the regular-season, Calaza was named the AAC Libero of the Week seven times out of a possible 10.
Moore, a junior from Louisville, Ky., leads the team in kills with 423. She also boasts a team-best .295 hitting percentage and has 130 digs to her credit. Moore ranks 31st in the NAIA in total kills and 47th in kills per set with 3.53.
Merritt, a senior from Abingdon, Va., has 400 kills on the year with a .245 hitting percentage. She also has 102 digs and 43 total blocks to her credit. Merritt ranks 45th in the NAIA in total kills.
Edmonds, who hails from Burlington, Ky., boasts 155 kills, a .210 hitting percentage and a team-best 92 total blocks.
The Bulldogs also had three players named to the Academic All-Conference Team. The honorees are: Merritt, Chandler Gray and Faith Welch.
Union finished the regular season 24-8 overall and 17-3 in the AAC. The Bulldogs open the AAC Tournament on Thursday as the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 Virginia Intermont at 1 p.m.
