
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College Bulldogs held on for a 60-59 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over the visiting Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan College Tuesday.
Union took a 56-54 advantage with a pair of free throws from Brian Kirk (Augusta, Ky.) with 7:41 left in regulation. A minute later, Tennessee Wesleyan took the lead with four straight free throws. The first two came from Willie Maclin and Tyler Gaskin sunk the other two.
Neither team scored for the next four plus minutes until Bill Davis (Harrodsburg, Ky.) converted on a lay up.
A foul was called on Union’s James Johnson (Lexington, Ky.) with 13 seconds to go to send Zach Gulmire to the line. He made the first one, but missed the potential game-tying second toss.
Chris Stunson (Richmond, Ky.) missed the front end of his one-and-one to give the ball back to Tennessee Wesleyan. A final shot fell short securing the win for Union.
Union controlled a majority of the opening half, leading by as many as 10 points, 22-12. Aaron Dunaway (Lexington, Ky.) scored 13 straight points for Union in a six-minute span. He ended the half with 18 points and a game-high 22 points.
A jumper in the lane as the horn blew from B.J. Miller gave Tennessee Wesleyan a 32-31 lead at halftime.
Stunson also scored in double-digits with 12 points.
Tennessee Wesleyan was led by Wes Adams with 17 points with a perfect 5-for-5 behind the 3-point line. Wes Stuiter and Zach Gulmier scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Union made 24-of-45 shots from the field, while Tennessee Wesleyan went 19-of-49 from the field. Tennessee Wesleyan grabbed 15 offensive rebounds compared to Union’s 4 offensive rebounds.
The Bulldogs of Union improved to 6-7 in the conference and matches last season’s conference win total. The Bulldogs also moved to 16-9 overall. Tennessee Wesleyan dropped to 8-17 overall and 5-8 in conference play.
Union will host No. 22 Bluefield (Va.) College Saturday for a 6 p.m. conference contest. Bluefield took the first match up on Jan. 9 by the score of 104-78.
