WILMORE, Ky. - Forward Gerard Newby came off the bench and scored 26 points, as the Union men's basketball team blew out Welch (Tenn.), 108-52, on Friday night at Luce Center. The game was apart of the 2013 Zweifel/Pritchett Classic.
With the win, Union improved to 9-2 and extended their winning streak to four games.
From the start, Union was the aggressor in the contest, opening up a 14-4 lead in the first six minutes, and never looking back the rest of the game. The Bulldogs went on a roll to end the first half, and into the locker room for intermission up by 36 points at 58-22.
The roll continued for the Bulldogs in the second half, as they coasted over the final 20 minutes to record a huge 56-point victory over Welch.
Overall, Newby led five double-digit scorers on the night for the Bulldogs, shooting 12-of-13 from the floor to record his 26-point evening. Newby also snatched seven rebounds and blocked three shots in the victory, as well.
Elsewhere, forward Deante Johnson scored in double-figures again with 17 points, Tremayne Elias had 14 points, and Nay Walker and Stewart Washington had 10 points, apiece. Guard Dalton Whitney had seven points, but dished out a game-high 10 assists and recorded six steals.
Welch was led in the loss by Carson Outlaw, who had 15 points.
By the Numbers
- Union scored over 100 points for the sixth time of the 2013-14 season in the victory. The Bulldogs are now 5-1 in games where they hit or go over the century mark.
- Johnson scored in double-figures for the eighth straight game in the victory. For his career, the junior has scored in double digits 18 times.
- The Union bench came up big in the decisive victory, scoring 62 total points.
Union concludes play at the Zweifel/Pritchett Classic tomorrow, as the Bulldogs entertain Ohio Christian. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
