BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - A big second half helped turn a two-point lead into an 85-65 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory for No. 21 Union over visiting Point (Ga.) on Saturday.

The win snaps a two-game winless streak for the Bulldogs, who improve to 7-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The Skyhawks fall to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in league play.

Up 36-34 at the break, Union opened the second half with a 9-0 run to push the margin to 45-34 with 18:10 remaining. Haley Perkins and Aaliyah Lumson each drained a 3-pointer during the run with Lydia Nash chipping an old-fashioned, three-point. The margin hovered around 12 points for the next five minutes before the Bulldogs went on another run, reeling off 20 of the next 27 to stretch their lead to 74-49 with 7:24 left.

Point accounted for the next six points to make it a 19-point game, but Union pushed the lead to 81-57 after a Lumson bucket with 3:14 to go en route to the 20-point decision.

Five Bulldogs scored in double figures with Perkins leading the way with 17 points. Nash had 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds, and Lumson knocked in 14 points. Macy Clontz and Alyson Roberts contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Dereese Owens led Point with 19 points with 17 coming in the first half alone. Alex Tucker added 12. 

Union dominated the glass, outrebounding Point 47-32 and shot 50 percent (31-of-62 shots) from the field. The Bulldogs hit seven 3-pointers but hit only 26.9 percent (7-of-26) of their long range shots. 

Conversely, Point connected on 23-of-62 shots (37.1 percent) from the field and was 3-of-14 (21.4 percent) from behind the arc.

By the Numbers

  • Union led by as much 13 points in the first half, but Point rallied to tie the game at 34 and to trail by only two at the break.
  • There was only one tie and no lead changes in the game.
  • Union turned the ball over 20 times, and Point scored 18 points off of them. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs scored 16 points off of the Skyhawks' 14 miscues.
  • Union made its home in the lane, scoring 58 points in the paint.
  • Nash connected on all six of her shots from the field, marking the second time this season she shot 100 percent in a game. On the season, she is connecting on 61 percent of her shots.

Up Next

The Bulldogs are off until Friday when they will host the Union College Holiday Classic. Union will open play on Friday against Tennessee Temple at 8 p.m. before taking on Cumberlands (Ky.) at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
