BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union saw its two-game win streak come to a halt as visiting Cumberlands (Ky.) held off the Bulldogs for a 67-54 decision Saturday in the Union College Holiday Classic.
The loss drops Union to 8-5 overall, while Cumberlands improves to 4-3 on the year.
In the other game of the Classic, Tennessee Temple downed Montreat (N.C.) 88-76.
Down 29-20 at the half, the Bulldogs opened the second period on a 9-0 run to tie the game with 16:19 to play. Lydia Nash accounted for six of the points during the rally. However, the Patriots countered with a 12-2 surge to open up a 41-31 cushion with 13:12 left. Union kept scrapping, cutting the margin to 49-45 with 7:30 remaining after Aaliyah Lumson hit one of two free throws.
However, that was as close Union would get to reclaiming the lead as Cumberlands built another double-digit lead en route the 67-54 decision.
Poor shooting did Union in as it made 18-of-55 shots (32.7 percent) and was 2-for-17 (11.8 percent) from long range. After making all five free-throw attempts in the first half, the Bulldogs went 11-of-22 at the line in the second half to finish with a 59.3 free-throw percentage.
Cumberlands hit 40 percent (24-of-60) from the floor but went 3-for-15 (20 percent) from long range. The Patriots connected on 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from the foul line.
Julie Haye led Cumberlands with 19 points with Jessica Upchurch and Jackie Alexander following with 13 and 12, respectively.
