BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union head coach Tommy Reid has released the tentative schedule for the 2014 football season.
The 11-game slate features five home dates, six roads games, six Mid-South Conference East contests, three matchups against Mid-South Conference West opponents, and a game against NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II squads.
The Bulldogs will open the 2014 campaign on Thursday, Aug. 28 at Murray State (Ky.), marking the program's first contest against a NCAA Division I opponent since Sept. 15, 2011, when Union played at UT-Martin. This will be the ninth game against a NCAA Division I squad in program history. Union is 0-8 in these games.
After over a two-week layoff, Union returns to NAIA competition when it visits Faulkner (Ala.) on Sept. 13. The Bulldogs own a 3-2 record against the Eagles but have lost the last two meetings by the scores of 95-89 in 2011 and 59-20 last season.
Union then will embark on a two-game homestand, beginning with the Battle of the Brass Lantern versus Cumberlands (Ky.) on Sept. 20. Last season, the Bulldogs were tied with the Patriots 21-all at the half before falling 52-21. This will also be the Bulldogs' first MSC East game of the year. On Sept. 27, Union welcomes NCAA Division II UVa-Wise to Burch/Nau Field. The Bulldogs are 9-5 all-time agaisnt the Cavaliers, including last season's 24-17 victory.
The Bulldogs will begin October on the road as they travel to Waleska, Ga., on Oct. 4 to face Reinhardt, which defeated Union 21-18 in the programs' inaugural meeting last season.
On Oct. 11, Union welcomes Cumberland (Tenn.) to Barbourville. Last season, Cumberland edged Union 45-43 in a wild affair. The following week (Oct. 18) is Union's Homecoming with Bluefield (Va.) making an appearance. Since the Rams restarted their football program in 2012, the Bulldogs are 2-0 against them. In 2013, Union notched a 45-35 decision over Bluefield. Beginning with this game, Union's final five contests are against MSC East foes.
The next three weeks will be spent on the road as Union will play at Kentucky Christian on Oct. 25, Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) on Nov. 1 and Georgetown (Ky.) on Nov. 8. The Bulldogs defeated KCU 24-17 last season but lost 72-9 to Lindsey Wilson and 42-21 to Georgetown.
The Bulldogs will close out the 2014 regular season at home against Pikeville (Ky.). Union leads the series with a 6-5 record, but the Bears registered a 56-38 decision last season.
The start times for all of the games have yet to be finalized and will be announced at a later date.
Union went 3-8 overall and 1-5 in the MSC East. The Bulldogs had one player make the All-MSC East first team with five other landing on the second team.
