BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College forward Deante Johnson scored 16 points to lead the way, as the 25th-ranked Bulldogs make quick work of Hiwassee (Tenn.) in an 89-52 victory on Monday night at Robsion Arena.
With the win, Union won their eighth straight game to improve to 18-3 overall on the year.
For most of the first half, the game remained tight, as Union held a 23-18 lead with 6:49 left in the period. From there, however, the Bulldogs dominated play, ending the period on a 22-5 scoring run to take a 45-23 lead into the locker room for intermission. The period was capped off by a Tashan Hairston three-pointer at the buzzer, giving Union a 22-point halftime lead.
It was more of the same for Union in the second half, as they opened up a 59-31 lead five minutes into the period. The deficit was too much for the visiting Tigers to come back from, as the Bulldogs rolled to a huge 37-point out-of-conference victory.
Overall, Johnson was one of just two double-digit scorers on the night for the Bulldogs with his 16-point performance (on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor). The other Union player to hit double-figures was guard Tarik Smith, who scored 10 points off the bench.
Hiwassee was led in the loss by David Layne, who finished with 11 points.
