MADISONVILLE, Tenn. – Union College forward Deante Johnson scored 25 points to lead the way, as the No. 22 Bulldogs pulled out a 79-70 win at Hiwassee (Tenn.) on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, the Bulldogs won their 13th straight game to improve to 23-3 overall on the year.
In the first half, it remained tight through the first 15 minutes of play between the teams, as Hiwassee clung to a 26-25 lead with 5:29 left in the period. Here, the Bulldogs went on a quick 14-3 run over the next three minutes, taking a 10-point lead (39-29) with 2:30 left.
Hiwassee ended the half on a bit of a run, but it wasn't enough to come all the way back, as Union went into the locker room for intermission up by six at 39-33.
To start the second period, the Bulldogs quickly extended the lead to 14 points (47-33) after racing out of the locker room on an 8-0 run. That deficit proved to be too much for the host Tigers to come back from, as the closest they came to the Union lead the rest of the way seven points (77-70) with 25 seconds left.
From there, the Bulldogs salted the game away at the line, rolling to the tough road non-conference victory.
Overall, Johnson led Union in the scoring department once again with his 25-point afternoon, missing just one shot on the day (he shot 10-of-11 from the floor).
Other double-digit scorers for the Bulldogs included Tarik Smith, who had 12 points, Fitzgerald White, who had 11 points, and DeAntray Stevens, who finished with 10 points.
Hiwassee was led the loss by Justin Browner, who had 25 points.
The Bulldogs leap back into Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Saturday, traveling to St. Andrews (N.C.) for a conference clash. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
