BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore catcher Andrea Foster belted a walk-off, RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning, propelling the Union College softball team to a 4-3 victory over Cumberlands (Ky.), clinching a doubleheader sweep of the Patriots for the Bulldogs. Union was victorious in game one, 5-2.

The pair of games was the 2014 season opener for both Union and Cumberlands, as the Bulldogs improved to 2-0 on the young season with the sweep.

Game Two

In the thrilling second game, Union was first to strike in the bottom of the second, after Ashley Wojnowski forced a bases loaded walk with two outs, giving the Bulldogs the early 1-0 edge.

After rolling through the first three innings, freshman pitcher Megan Baldwin finally ran into trouble in the top of the fourth, as Cumberlands plated two runs to give the visiting Patriots a 2-1 lead. The lead, however, was short lived, as the Bulldogs successfully pulled off a double steal with runners on first and third, scoring Tiffanie Moore to tie the game up at 2-2 in the bottom half of the frame.

After Cumberlands wrestled the lead back in the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs once again answered, as a Moore RBI single scored Danielle Borum to tie it up at 3-3. Union, however, left the bases loaded in the frame.

Following a scoreless inning and a half, Union came up to bat in the bottom of the seventh with a chance to win the game. After an out, Moore singled through the hole at shortstop, setting up the stage for Foster, who delivered on her game-winning RBI triple, who roped a pitched all the way to the right center field fence to clnch the sweep for Union.

Overall, Moore led the way at the dish in game two, going 4-for-4 with an RBI, while Foster went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. In the circle, Baldwin picked up the win (1-0) after tossing a complete game. Kenly Lambert (0-1) took the loss for Cumberlands.

Game One

In the first game, Union scored the final three runs of a tied contest to pull away from the Patriots late.

After two and a half innings of scoreless ball, Union finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, after Wojnowski scored on a throwing error and Amanda Cupp came home on a ground out, giving the Bulldogs the early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, however, Cumberlands knotted the game up at 2-2. The lead, however, was short lived. After leading the inning off with a single, Wojnowski came home on a Cupp RBI groundout with one out, giving the Bulldogs the lead back at 3-2.

Union put the Patriots away in the sixth, scoring two more runs on a costly error by the Patriots with two outs to go up three. In the seventh, Cumberlands went down quietly, as the Bulldogs earned a win in their opening game of the season.

Overall, Wojnowski went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Bulldogs, while Erin Cooper went 2-for-2. Borum, who ended the game 0-for-4, ironically had the only two RBI in the game for Union, as well.

In the circle, starter Rachel Cogdill (1-0) earned the win, allowing two unearned runs on five hits in five and two thirds innings of work. Baldwin came on in the sixth and recorded the final four outs of the game to notch her first career save. Nicol Chelsey (0-1) took the loss for Cumberlands.
