BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College softball team took a pair of games from out-of-conference foe Midway (Ky.) on Wednesday, besting the Eagles in game one, 7-4, while hanging on for a 2-1 victory in game two.

With the results, Union snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 11-7 on the year. Midway fell to 2-8 with the defeats.

Game One

In the first game, Union opened up a big lead after two innings, and after fighting off a late rally by Midway, coasted down the stretch to notch the three-run win.

In the bottom of the first, nine Union players came to the plate, as the Bulldogs scored three runs to take the quick 3-0 lead. It was more of the same for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the second, as they tacked on two more runs to take a 5-0 lead after two innings. With starter Rachel Cogdill (SR, Knoxville, Tenn.) in the circle and pitching well, it appeared Union would roll to a win, as they lead by five runs entering the fifth.

However, Midway mounted a comeback, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth to cut the Bulldog lead all the way down to 5-4. In the bottom of the frame, Union answered, scoring twice to go back up by three. After being replaced to start the fourth, Cogdill came back on in the sixth and shut the door on the Midway rally, retiring six of the last seven Eagle batters to earn the victory for Union.

Overall, shortstop Tiffanie Moore (FR, Maryville, Tenn.) led the Union offense in game one, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Danielle Borum (SO, Kingston, Tenn. ) also went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Cogdill went to 4-3 on the year with her victory, tossing five innings of shutout softball, allowing just three hits, while striking out nine.

Game Two

The second game turned into a pitcher's duel between Midway's Hailey Roby and Union's Katie Perkins (SR, Owensboro, Ky. ), who both baffled hitters through five innings, as the game remained scoreless into the sixth.

After another scoreless half inning by Midway in the top of the frame, Union took control of the contest in the bottom, plating two runs. The rally started with an Amanda Cupp (SO, Latonia, Ky. ) single, which was followed up by a McKenna Brown (FR, Frankfort, Ky. ) double. On the relay throw into the infield, the ball was misplayed by Midway's second baseman, allowing Cupp to score from third to give Union a 1-0 lead.

Brown was knocked home a batter later, as Chandler Overton (FR, Nashville, Tenn.) put down a successful RBI sacrifice bunt to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. This run proved to be the game-winner, as Midway would not go away quietly in the seventh.

After back-to-back singles with two outs plated the Eagles' only run, and with runners on first and second, Perkins forced a ground ball to third base that was easily recorded for a force out, giving the Bulldogs the doubleheader sweep with the one-run victory.

Overall, Ashley Wojnowski (JR, Sevierville, Tenn.) led the Bulldog offense in the second game, going 3-for-4, while Brianne Bowling (JR, Woodburn, Ore. ) went 2-for-4. In the circle, Perkins went the distance to earn her first win of the year, allowing a run on seven hits, while striking out eight.
