BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) officially released the bracket for the 23rd annual NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship, presented by State Farm, on Wednesday, and Union is a No. 7 seed.
The Bulldogs (24-8 overall) are making their fifth appearance at the national tournament but are in search of their first victory at the big dance, having gone 0-4 in their previous trips. Union qualified for the tournament by winning the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament championship.
Union's opening round opponent is No. 2 seed Hastings (Neb.), and the two will tip off on Wednesday, March 12, at 5:15 p.m. Central. The 32-team, single elimination format will take place from March 12 – 18 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa, for the 17th-straight season.
The Lady Broncos (26-5 overall) are making their 14th tournament appearance and boast a 31-10 tournament record with three national championships to their credit. Hastings won titles in 2002, 2003 and 2006.
Like Union, Hastings last tournament appearance came in 2012. The Lady Broncos are ranked No. 7 in the final NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office also announced Wednesday. Hastings qualified for the tournament by virtue of an at-large bid.
The Lady Broncos compete in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and finished in a four-way tie for the regular-season championship with Concordia (Neb.), Morningside (Iowa) and Northwestern (Iowa), all of which qualified for the tournament as well.
