BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - A pair of five-run rallies gave the Union baseball team all the runs it needed and then some as the Bulldogs posted a 13-3 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over visiting Virginia Intermont on Saturday.

Union improves to 19-7 overall and 7-2 in league play. Virginia Intermont falls to 9-13 overall and 5-4 in the AAC.

The Bulldogs collected only eight hits on the day; however, they were walked 15 times and hit twice. LaVance Anderson (SR, Bowling Green, Ky.) led Union at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs, three walks and three runs scored. No other Bulldog had more than one hit, yet John Wilson (JR, Manchester, Ky.) delivered three RBIs.

Wilson put the first run on the board when his sac fly allowed Anderson to score in the third. Virginia Intermont evened the ledger in the top of the fourth, but Union countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame for a 3-1 lead. Anderson came through with a run-scoring double, and Miguel Mendez (SR, Lansing, Mich.) lofted a sac fly to account for the runs.

The Cobras scored again in the fifth, cutting the margin to 3-2. The Bulldogs, though, put together a five-run rally to build an 8-2 cushion. Union scored the five runs on only two hits as it was helped out by an error, two wild pitchs, two hit batters, three walks and a passed ball.

In the seventh, Virginia Intermont posted its final run before Union mounted another five-run outburst to wrap up the 13-3 contest. Wilson's two-run double was the big hit in the rally.

Trey Alexander (SO, Glasgow, Ky.) came in relief to pitch three innings to get the win, improving his mark to 1-1 on the season. He allowed one earned run on one hit and three walks.

By the Numbers

  • Union is 4-1 in games decided by 10 more or runs this season. The Bulldogs are 9-0 when scoring at least 10.
  • The 15 walks are a season high for the Bulldogs. The program record is 17 against Davenport (Mich.) on Feb. 8 2013.
  • With his three RBIs, Wilson now has 22 for the season. Three Bulldogs have 20 or more RBIs thus far. Joining Wilson are Jared Tomany (SR, Bryant, Wis.) (21) and Nelson Price (JR, Burkesville, Ky.) (34).
  • The Bulldogs stole two bases today, giving them 81 on the year. Heading into the game, Union ranked fourth in the NAIA in stolen bases.
