BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union rallied for five runs in its final two at bats to win the second game of an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader 7-6 over visiting Montreat (N.C.) Saturday, completing the twinbill sweep. The Bulldogs won the first game 6-2.
The wins extend Union's win streak to six, upping the team's record to 23-7 overall and 9-2 in the AAC. Montreat falls to 9-16 overall and 1-8 in league play.
In the second game, Montreat got off to a hot start, scoring three runs in the first. The Cavaliers only had two hits, but they benefited from three walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch. Fortunately for Union, the damage was contained as Montreat left the bases loaded.
Union cut the margin to 3-2 in the second thanks to a LaVance Anderson (SR/Bowling Green, Ky.) RBI single and Vance Sullivan (JR/Verona, Ky.) scoring on an error. However, Montreat tacked on two in the fifth and another in the sixth for a 6-2 cushion.
The Bulldog bats, though, came alive in the sixth. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Sullivan, who singled in a run to cut the margin to 6-3. Two batters later, Anderson lined a two-run single to right to make it a one-run game.
With one and one out, Tyler Young (SO/Manchester, Ky.) tripled to deep-center field to even the score at 6-6. After an intentional walk to set up a potential double play, pinch-runner Corey Corum (FR/Manchester, Ky.) slid under the tag when Jared Tomany (SR/Bryant, Wis.) bunted his way on for the game-winning run.
Anderson finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Sullivan went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
Justin King (JR/Barbourville, Ky.) improved to 5-0 on the year, allowing one earned run on six hits and no walks in three innings of work.
Game One - Union 6, Montreat 2
Montreat struck first, but a pair of three-run innings propelled Union to the 6-2 decision.
Terry Carson belted a solo home run in the third to put the Cavalivers up 1-0. Yet, Union countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Union rapped out four hits as Nelson Price (JR/Burkesville, Ky.), Young and Ryan Horvath (JR/Madison Heights, Mich.) each collected RBIs in the inning.
Montreat pushed across an unearned run in the fourth to make it 3-2, and it remained a one-run game until fifth when Union put another three-spot. Corey Nicholson (SR/Manchester, Ky.) delivered the big blow with a pinch-hit, two-run single.
Luke Collis (SR/St. Charles, Mo.) went the distance for his third complete game of the year to get the win. He allowed two runs, one earned, on 11 hits and one walk with four strikeouts, improving his record to 5-1.
At the plate, Miguel Mendez (SR/Lansing, Mich.) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
