HICKORY, N.C. - The Union College men's and women's track & field teams opened the outdoor portion of their 2014 schedule on Saturday afternoon, taking part in the 2014 Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) PowerSox Invitational.

For the men's team, Andrew Johnston (SR/Benton, Ky.) registered the best performance of the day in an event for the Bulldogs, placing second in the pole vault with a 12 foot, 11.50 inch clearance.

Meanwhile, William White (SR/Manchester, Ky.) finished third in the hammer throw with a 129 feet, eight inch toss (to break a school-record), and fifth in the javelin with a 131 foot, 11 inch effort.  Matt Francis (JR/Salyersville, Ky.) rounded out the top performance in the field for the men, placing seventh in the hammer throw (107 feet, one inch effort).

In track events for the men, Nick Cash (FR) placed fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 12:49.98, while the 4x100-meter relay squad was fourth with a time of 45.84. Domonique Jefferson (JR/Lawrenceville, Ga..) notched the highest finish individually on the track for the Union men, finishing ninth in the 100-meter dash (11.39).

On the women's side, Abby Tigue (JR/Pineville, Ky.) was eighth in the weight throw with a toss of 90 feet, four inches, and Alex Prokopchak (FR) placed ninth in the javelin with a 69 foot, one inch effort. On the track, Jessica Shepherd (SO) finished eighth in the 100-meter dash in 13.32, and the women's 4x400 relay team crossed the finish line in sixth place (4:45.23) to break a school-record, rounding out the top performances on the day for the Bulldogs.

The Union College track & field teams will take part in two events next weekend, splitting up between the Shorter (Ga.) Invitational and the Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) Invite on Mar. 29.
