BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - It was almost déjà vu for the Bulldogs on Sunday as Union nearly rallied back for the win. However, visiting Montreat (N.C.) held on for 6-5 Appalachian Athletic Conference decision, snapping Union's six-game win streak.

The loss drops the Bulldogs to 23-8 overall and 9-3 in league play, while the Cavaliers improve to 10-16 overall and 2-9 in the AAC.

Like Saturday's second game of the doubleheader, Montreat took the early lead and own a comfortable advantage late in the game. The Cavaliers scored twice in the second, but the lead was cut in half when Tyler Young (SO/Manchester, Ky.) singled in a run. But a Montreat tally in the fifth and a three-run Cavalier rally in the sixth pushed the margin to 6-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Union took advantage of a pair of Montreat errors to scratch out three runs. Pinch-hitter Zach Dillman (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) came through with a two-run sinlge, and LaVance Anderson (SR/Bowling Green, Ky.) added a RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Union appeared to be on the comeback trail again in the seventh as nine straight balls from reliever Cody Reid loaded the bases with two walk and a hit batter with no outs. Yet, the Bulldogs managed to push across one run in the frame. Jared Tomany (SR/Bryant, Wis.) singled to make it 6-5, but the next three batters popped out, struck out and flew out to end the threat.

The Bulldogs still had opportunities in the eighth and ninth, putting two runners on in both innings. In the eighth, Union had two on with one out, but a flyout to left and a strikeout squashed any potential rally. With two outs in the ninth, J.D. Burrell (JR/Amanda, Ohio) and Anderson lined back-to-back singles, but a fielder's choice to short snuffed the Bulldogs' hope of a series sweep as Montreat held on to the 6-5 win.

Young led Union at the plate in going 2-for-2 with a run scored and one driven in. Anderson and Mendez each went 2-for-6.

Lance Gower was one of five Cavaliers with multiple hits, but he had the best day in going 2-for3 with a RBI, two walks and two runs scored.

Casey Whittle (FR/Danville, Ky.) suffered the loss, dropping him to 4-1 on the season. Dakotah Thomas got the win to make him 5-3, and Reid notched his first save of the season.
