CLEVELAND, Ga. - Senior Luke Collis (SR/St. Charles, Mo.) hurled a complete-game, two-hit shutout on Sunday as No. 19 Union split an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader with host Truett-McConnell (Ga.). Union won the opener 5-0 before falling 7-5.
The Bulldogs are now 24-9 overall and 10-4 in league play, while the Bears are 8-25 overall and 3-11 in the AAC.
Collis was on point from the first pitch, facing a total of 24 batters, as he walked none and allowed two hits. One batter reached on an error. Truett-McConnell never had more than one runner on base with only one making it to second.
The Bears had a runner reach on an error in the second. In the fourth, Chris Carden doubled with two outs, but the threat ended with a groundout to short. Truett-McConnell picked up its final hit in the seventh, a two-out single. Yet, the game ended on a groundout to second.
Collis fanned four in the win, improving his record to 6-1.
Union scored a run in each the second, fourth and sixth innings before sealing the win with two runs in the seventh. The Bulldogs rapped out nine hits with John Wilson (JR/Manchester, Ky.) going 3-for-4.
Game Two - Truett-McConnell 7, Union 5
The Bears reeled off six runs in the first two innings to take the early advantage and held on for the two-run decision.
Truett-McConnell scored once in the first before rallying for five in the second. In the five-run outburst, the Bears had only three hits but took advantage of two walks and a hit batter. Sean Cheshire and Cam Pearson each had two-run hits in the inning.
Union cut the margin to 6-3 in the fourth as the Bulldogs took advantage of two Bear errors to push the runs across with the benefit of a hit.
The Bears scored another run in the fifth, while the Bulldogs added a run in each the sixth and seventh, but it was too little, too late as Truett-McConnell held on for the 7-5 win.
Union and Truett-McConnell will complete the series with a single, nine-inning game on Monday at 3 p.m.
