MIDWAY, Ky. - The Union College softball team bounced back in a big way on Tuesday afternoon, blowing past Midway (Ky.) in a pair of NAIA contests. The Bulldogs captured game one, 8-0, then followed it up with a 9-1 victory in five innings in game two.
With the victories, the Bulldogs stopped a four-game losing skid, improving to 18-18 overall. Midway fell to 5-19 with the defeat.
In game one, Union leaped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third on the heels of an Ashley Wojnowski (JR/Sevierville, Tenn.) two-RBI triple, along with RBI hits by Tiffanie Moore (FR/Maryville, Tenn.) and Amanda Cupp (SO/Latonia, Ky. ). In the fourth, the Bulldogs increased the lead to 5-0 on another Wojnowski RBI hit, this time a single.
In the seventh, Union put the game away with three more runs to go up eight. The early lead was more than enough for starting pitcher Rachel Cogdill (SR/Knoxville, Tenn.) to work with, as she posted the win (7-9), tossing six shutout innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out four.
In game two, it was more of the same, as the Bulldogs made quick work of the host Eagles in the five inning win to clinch the sweep. In the win, Union put the game away with five runs in the top of the third inning to go up 6-1. The Bulldogs then tacked on three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the win.
In the circle, Megan Baldwin (FR/London, Ky. ), Katie Perkins (SR/Owensboro, Ky. ), and Morgan Johnson (SO/Kennesaw, Ga.) all pitched, with Perkins (5-4) collecting the victory.
The Bulldogs continue their road-trip on Saturday, taking on Appalachian Athletic Conference foe St. Andrews (N.C.). The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
