LAURINBURG, N.C. - Union College's Tiffanie Moore (FR/Maryville, Tenn.) had three RBI, as the Bulldogs held off a late comeback bid by St. Andrews to record an 8-7 victory in game two of an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. In game one, SAU was victorious, 7-2.
With the results, Union went to 19-19 overall, 3-11 in the AAC, while SAU is now 16-17. 9-5 in the AAC.
After struggling to score runs in game one, the Bulldogs leaped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings of the second game.
In the first, the Bulldogs plated three runs to take a quick 3-0 lead. Ashley Wojnowski (JR/Sevierville, Tenn.) scored the game's first run on an error, while Rachel Cogdill (SR/Knoxville, Tenn.) laced a two-RBI single, scoring Brianna Degennaro (JR/Shalimar, Fla. ) and Danielle Borum (SO/Kingston, Tenn. ).
Union tacked on two more runs in the second to increase the lead to five, as Moore had a two out, two-RBI double scoring Wojnowski and Brianne Bowling (JR/Woodburn, Ore. ). Over the next three innings, however, the Bulldog offense cooled down, as SAU scored three runs in the third and fourth innings to trail it 5-3 entering the sixth.
In that frame, the Bulldogs scored three huge runs to go up 8-3. Moore had her second RBI double scoring Degennaro, while Andrea Foster (SO/Harriman, Tenn.) smacked a critical two-RBI triple with two outs, giving the Bulldogs a five-run lead.
That hit by Moore turned out to be the decider, as SAU made a run at the Bulldogs in the last two innings. After scoring two runs in the sixth to cut the lead down to 8-5 entering the seventh, the Knights tallied two more runs in the seventh, and had the game-tying run on third base with two outs.
However, Union reliever Megan Baldwin (FR/London, Ky. ) forced a ground out to end it, as the Bulldogs hung on to notch the one-run win.
Overall, Moore led the Bulldogs at the dish in game two, going 2-for-4 with two RBI doubles and a run scored. Elsewhere, Wojnowski went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Foster was 2-for-2 with two RBI.
In the circle, Katie Perkins (SR/Owensboro, Ky. ) earned the win (6-4), allowing three earned runs in six innings of work. Baldwin earned her fourth save of the season in the victory, as well.
In the first game SAU opened up a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning and never looked back, rolling to a five run win.
Union plated runs in the fifth and seventh innings on RBI by Bowling and Moore. In the circle, Cogdill (7-10) was the loser, allowing five earned runs in six innings of work.
The Union College softball team returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Truett-McConnell for another AAC DH. First pitch for game one is set for 12 p.m.
