BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Junior right-hander Marty Popham struck out eight batters in a five-inning, complete-game victory as No. 19 Union College swept both ends of a doubleheader from visiting Rochester (Mich.) College Saturday, winning 12-1 and 10-3.

Popham (Louisville, Ky.) gave up just one earned run on one hit and no walks while fanning eight. He needed just 64 pitches to get through the game. Popham is now 3-0 on the year with a 1.93 earned-run average and has 21 strikeouts in 14 innings of work.

Union improved to 7-0 on the season, while Rochester is now 0-2.

In the first game, Rochester took the early lead, scoring a run in the ftop of the first. However, Union tied the game in the second when Josh Ehringer (Somerset, Ky.) scored when Brett McAlpin (Winchester, Ky.) reached on an error.

Union broke the game open with a four-run third. Lioney Henriquez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a solo home run, and later in the frame, Matt Brady (Louisville, Ky.) added a three-run shot to give Union a 5-1 advantage.

The Bulldogs put the game away in the fourth as they reeled off seven runs. Joe Grinstead (Bowling Green, Ky.) had the big hit of the inning when he hit a three-run home run. Ehringer added a two-run single.

In the second game, Justin Hart (Lake Mary, Fla.) drove in three runs while three others knocked in two as Union recorded the 10-3 decision.

Rochester again took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Union countered with four in the bottom of the inning and never looked back.

Lanch Doughtery (Canyon, Texas) got the win, improving to 3-0 on the year. The left-hander gave up three runs, one earned, on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings of work. Brett Nuss (Lake Mary, Fla.) tossed two innings of shutout ball to close out the game.

Henriquez went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brady also went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Trey Wheeler (Hopkinsville, Ky.) was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

These two teams will square off again Sunday for a twinbill at 1 p.m.
