ST. CATHARINE, Ky. - Union needed five extra frames to collect its second win in a row, but a three-run 14th proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs defeated host St. Catharine (Ky.) 6-3 on Wednesday.
The win improves Union to 27-13 overall, while St. Catharine falls to 19-19 on the year.
The Bulldogs lead 2-0 after seven innings, but the Patriots posted two runs in the bottom of the eighth to even the score. Drew Kissel lined a run-scoring double, and pinch-runner Lamont Calloway later came home thanks to a wild pitch to make it 2-2.
It remained tied until the 12th when Vance Sullivan (JR/Verona, Ky.) scored off of a Miguel Mendez (SR/Lansing, Mich.) fielder's choice to give Union a 3-2 edge. However, Kissel delivered a RBI single to tie the game and send it to the 13th inning.
After a scoreless 13th, the Bulldogs broke loose for three runs in the 14th. With runners on second and third with one out, Mendez singled to drive in the go-ahead run. Ryan Horvath (JR/Madison Heights, Mich.) followed with a two-run double to put Union up 6-3.
Union, though, was not out of the woods as St. Catharine threatened in the bottom of the 14th. The first two batters went down without incident, yet the Patriots proceeded to load the bases with two outs thanks to a hit by pitch and back-to-back singles. But the threat ended there as Sullivan got Marc Mason to ground out to second for the final out, securing the 6-3 victory.
Sullivan picked up the win, improving to 2-0 on the year. He allowed no runs on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings pitched. He also went 2-for-6 at the plate with a run scored.
Mendez and Horvath each finished 2-for-7 with two RBIs. Mendez also scored two runs. Nelson Price (JR/Burkesville, Ky.) went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two doubles.
Kissel led the Patriot attack in going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Trenton Claunch suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in three innings of work. He is now 2-5.
Union will hit the road this Friday and Saturday to face Reinhardt (Ga.) in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. The Bulldogs are currently third in the conference standings, while the Eagles are second.
