BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union put together a late rally, but it was not enough to overcome a five-run deficit as visiting Campbellsville (Ky.) held on for the 5-3 decision on Wednesday.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 29-15 overall, while the Tigers improve to 25-14.
Down 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Nelson Price (JR/Burkesville, Ky.) led the frame off by launching a missile over the right-field wall for his ninth home run of the season.
In the seventh, the Bulldogs put together four singles in a row to push a pair of runs across. Zach Dillman (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) and Zach Gross (JR/Bowling Green, Ky.) each roped RBI singles to cut the deficit to 5-3 with no outs. However, the threat ended there as Campbellsville brought in reliever T.R. Dunne, who promptly got the next three batters all out on strikes.
Dunne finished the game on the mound for the Tigers, facing the minimum in locking up the 5-3 decision for Campbellsville.
Union lined eight hits on the day with John Wilson (JR/Manchester, Ky.) leading the way with a 3-for-3 performance.
Campbellsville raced out of the gate to a 3-0 lead. Jaime Valle had the big hit of the rally with a two-run single. The Tigers tacked on a run in each the third and the sixth for a 5-0 cushion.
Valle and Alex Kline each had two RBIs for Campbellsville, and Dexter Cline picked up the win.
Union will host Bryan on Friday and Saturday for a three-game, Appalachian Athletic Conference series. Friday's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
