BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Mid-week games always bring adventure, and Tuesday's 11-10 victory was no different for Union.
The Bulldogs trailed by four midway through the game but rallied to seize a five-run cushion. Yet, visiting St. Catharine (Ky.) made things interesting with a four-run ninth to make the final 11-10.
The win is Union's fourth in a row as it improves to 33-15 on the season. St. Catharine falls to 22-25 overall.
Nelson Price (JR/Burkesville, Ky.) had a big game at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a two-run home run and three runs scored. The four-bagger was Price's 10th of the year and 20th for his career.
Catcher John Wilson (JR/Manchester, Ky.) came up big for the Bulldogs with a 3-for-5, three-RBI performance. The Manchester, Ky., native also lined two doubles.
Going into the bottom of the fifth, Union found itself trailing 6-2. With two on and one out, Zach Dillman (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) lofted a sac fly to make it 6-3, and Wilson roped a run-scoring double to cut the margin to 6-4.
The Bulldogs pieced together a three-run seventh to claim their first lead of the game. Dillman started the scoring with a RBI single. Wilson reached on a fielder's choice, allowing another run to cross to tie the game at 6-6. Jared Tomany (SR/Bryant, Wis.) followed with a run-scoring hit to drive in Ryan Horvath (JR/Madison Heights, Mich.) for the 7-6 advantage.
In the eighth, Union tacked on four insurance runs, and it turned out the Bulldogs needed every single one of them.
St. Catharine was down to its last out with no one on when it began to rally in the ninth. Five consecutive hits by the Patriots produced four runs. But the threat ended as Tomany got Drew Kissel out on strikes for the final out, securing the 11-10 decision.
Brady Smiley (FR/Hebron, Ky.) picked up his first win of the season, improving to 1-0. He tossed two shutout innings, allowing two hits and now walks with three strikeouts.
Cory Klinger took the loss for the Patriots, dropping to 1-1.
Harold Diaz led the Patriot offensive attack in going 3-for-5 with four RBIs.
For Union, Dillman went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
The teams combined for 30 hits, eight of which went for extra bases. Union also stole seven bases with Justin Elder (JR/Seven Mile, Ohio) leading the way with three.
Union will travel to Georgetown (Ky.) on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. date. On April 8, the Bulldogs bested the Tigers 3-1 at home.
