BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College Department of Athletics recently handed out its top honors at the school's Co-Curricular Awards Night, and Deante Johnson and Callie Harrigan were named the Male and Female Athlete of the Year while Garrick Whittle received the Danny Drinkard Award.
The Drinkard Award goes to the student-athlete who not only excels on the field of play, but in the classroom and in the community as well.
Johnson, a junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, helped the men's basketball team to arguably its best season in program history. The Bulldogs set a school record for wins in going 28-5 and won both the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships, marking the first time they won both a regular-season season and tournament title in the same season since 1971-72. Union also advanced to the NAIA National Championship Tournament. Johnson was named a NAIA All-American honorable mention as well as an All-AAC first team member. He averaged 15.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game and ranked second in NAIA Division II with a 68.0 field-goal percentage.
Harrigan, a junior from Windsor, Canada, helped the women's swimming team to one of its best-ever showing at the NAIA National Championship Meet with an eighth-place finish. She was named both a CSCAA and a NAIA All-American. Harrigan placed second at nationals in both the 200-free with a time of 1:52.59 and the 100-free in 51.46, and earned All-American honors with the 200-medley relay team, which placed 3rd with a time of 1:46.49.
Whittle, a senior from Danville, Ky., is in his first and only season with baseball team. He is a solid student in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA since being at Union. On the mound, Whittle has appeared in 12 games with 11 starts and owns a 2-5 record. He has struck out 29 batters in 31 2/3 innings pitched.
The honorees were selected by the Union head coaching staff.
