KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Sixth-seeded Point (Ga.) scored five runs in the eighth inning, pulling away from the third-seeded Union College baseball team, 7-2, at the 2014 Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament at Hunter Wright Stadium.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 34-19 overall, while Point improved to 29-23 with the victory.
After two scoreless innings to open the affair, Union cracked the scoreboard with a run in the top of the third, as LaVance Anderson (SR/Bowling Green, Ky.) scored from third base on a Point error to put the Bulldogs up, 1-0.
The Bulldogs tacked on their second run in the top of the fourth, as Vance Sullivan (JR/Verona, Ky.) hit a flare RBI single to shallow right field, scoring Zach Dillman (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) to make it 2-0 after three and a half. Over the next two innings, Point continued to struggle offensively against Union starter Luke Collis (SR/St. Charles, Mo.), not recording their first hit until the bottom of the fifth.
But, in the sixth, the Skyhawks finally got to Collis, scoring two runs with two outs to tie the game up at 2-2. Things remained knotted up at two entering the bottom of the eighth, where Point put the game away with a five-run inning. Union went down quietly in the ninth, as the Skyhawks moved on to the winners bracket with the come-from-behind victory.
Overall, Dillman was the only player in the Union line-up to have a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. On mound, Collis took the loss (9-2), striking out six in seven and one-thirds innings of work.
For Point, relief pitcher Christian Watford (4-1) was the winner, with Matt Hayes leading the way at the plate with a 3-for-4 afternoon.
The Bulldogs now move into the losers bracket of Pool B of the AAC Tournament, and will next play on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. against the loser of this afternoon's game between Reinhardt (Ga.) and Milligan (Tenn.).
