BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Senior Paige Moore (Louisville, Ky.) hammered down 11 kills, leading a balanced Union College volleyball attack, as the Bulldogs raced past Dalton State (Ga.) on Tuesday evening, sweeping the Road Runners, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-11) at Robsion Arena.

With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 4-2 on the year, while Dalton State fell to 2-1 with the loss.

"I was pleased with the atmosphere at our first home match," said head coach Jeremy Wise. "Our team did a great job pulling away on the scoreboard, and closed [Dalton State] out for the sweep. We learned some valuable lessons [at the Aces in August Tournament this past weekend] and grew up, and we bettered ourselves in those spots tonight.

"Overall, it was a great team win."

In the first set, Union came out a bit sluggish, falling behind 7-4 early on. From there, however, the Bulldogs dominated, going on a 9-3 run to take a 13-10 lead. After increasing their lead to 22-15, Union scored the three of the final four points of the set, clinching it on a block-assist by Rachel Andrews (FR/Louisville, Ky. ) and Julia Edmonds (SO/Burlington, Ky.).

The second set was a tight affair early on, tied at six-all. Here, the Bulldogs took the lead for good, rattling off five straight points to take an 11-6 lead. Once Union took the lead in the set, they never looked back, eventually opening up a 24-16 lead.

Dalton State made a bit of a run to keep it interesting, scoring four straight points to cut the Union lead down to 24-20. After a timeout, the Bulldogs finally ended the set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match on a Marissa Elam (FR/Muncie, Ind.) kill.

The third set was all Union, as the Bulldogs opened up an insurmountable 15-5 lead early on. The match and three-set sweep was clinched on a kill by Edmonds, as the Bulldogs walked out of their home opener at Robsion Arena with a convincing out-of-conference win.

Overall, Moore registered yet another double-digit kill performance with her 11, while Elam continued her impressive play early in the season with eight kills. Setter Heather Fields (SR/Louisville, Ky.) posted 18 assists in the win, while on defense, Ana Calaza (JR/Rio de Janerio, Brazil) recorded 20 digs. Both numbers were match-highs.

By the Numbers

  • Moore has now notched double-digit kills in four of the six matches the Bulldogs have played in on the young season. The Louisville, Ky. native also attacked at a .529 clip in the win, her highest of the season to date.
  • Calaza has recorded double-digit digs in all five of Union's matches on the year, while Fields has done the same in the assist category.
  • The home contest this evening was Union's last for over three weeks. The Bulldogs don't return home for a match until Sept. 19 vs. AAC-foe Truett-McConnell (Ga.).
