BLACKSBURG, Va. – A trio of Union College sprinters broke school record on the first day of the Virginia Tech Challenge inside Rector Field House Friday. Two Bulldogs also posted national-qualifying times in the 200-meter dash.

Andre Thornton (Loganville, Ga.) ran to a 22.15 to capture the win in his section of the 200 meters and the time is also an NAIA Indoor National Championship "A" qualifying time. The previous record was his and was set last year at 22.59 seconds. His time was the 21st fastest in the meet. Thornton also posted a time of 6.98 seconds in the 60-meter dash which is a “B” standard time.

Johnnie Nabors (Lawrenceville, Ga.) ran to a seventh-place finish in the 60-meter dash behind a time of 6.82 seconds, 0.03 seconds faster than his time in the preliminary race. It is also the second fastest time nationally in the event this year. He eclipsed his own school-record time of 6.84 seconds which came last year at the NAIA National Championship. Nabors also won his section of the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.38 seconds. It is also an NAIA "B" qualifying mark for the 200 meters.

Cody Miller, from Middlesboro, Ky. recorded a time of one minute and 31.49 seconds in the 600 meters to add his name to the record book.

Marekus Smith (Lithonia, Ga.) ran the 60-meter dash with a 7.17 seconds performance and followed that with a time of 23.31 seconds in the 200 meters. Scotty Barnes, a junior from Ewing, Va., was the third fastest Bulldog in the 60 meters with a time of 7.36 seconds.

Senior Brandon Kibert (Tazewell, Tenn.) needed 16:09.26 to run the 5,000 meters.

Freshman Erick Coleman (Chicago, Ill.) posted times of 23.60 and 7.39 seconds in the 200 and 60 meters, respectively.

The Virginia Tech Challenge concludes Saturday with a day full of events starting at 9 a.m. This is the Bulldogs’ last event before the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championship set to get underway on March 6 in Johnson City, Tenn.
