BRISTOL, Tenn. - Union College sophomore Brooke Smith was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year while senior Allison Fowler picked up Defensive Player of the Year honors, the league announced Wednesday.

Union, the 25th-ranked team in NAIA Division II Women's Basketball, is 22-8 and the second seed in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs will play the winner of the Montreat (N.C.) College-Bluefield (Va.) College game Thursday at 1:45 p.m.

Smith (Pineville, Ky.) was also named to the All-Conference First Team, and Fowler (Morganfield, Ky.) landed on the All-Conference Second Team as well as the All-Defensive Team. Susanna Todd (Eubank, Ky.) made the All-Conference Third Team.

Smith ranks second in NAIA Division II in scoring as she averages 23.9 points per game. In addition, she averages 7.60 rebounds per game and has 62 blocks, 41 assists and 29 steals on the season. Smith ranks sixth in the nation in field-goal percentage at 57.5 percent (263-of-457 shots). She has twice been named the AAC Player of the Week and once the NAIA Player of the Week. During the season, Smith recorded her 1,000th career point and set the records for most points in a game (54) and most field goals made in a game (20). She also became the second player in program history to score 700 points in a season.

Fowler set the single-season record for steals as she currently has 86 to her credit. She is averaging 12.7 points and 3.90 rebounds per game and leads the team with 127 assists. Fowler ranks fourth on the all-time scoring list with 1,348 points, 10th on the all-time rebounding list at 412, second on the all-time assists list at 411 and second all-time in steals with 260.

Todd, a junior, recently scored her 1,000th career point and currently ranks 12th all-time with 1,018 points. She also became the program's all-time leader in 3-pointers as Todd has made 192 in her career. On the year, Todd is averaging 10.2 points per game and has made 63 3-pointers on the year. She ranks fifth in NAIA Division II in 3-point field goal percentage as she has made 46.3 percent of her long-range shots. Todd also ranks 11th all-time in rebounding with 342.

Smith, Fowler and junior Carrie Bistline (Frankfort, Ky.) were named to the Academic All-Conference Team.
