BRISTOL, Tenn. - Senior Allison Fowler poured in a game-high 28 points as second-seeded Union College defeated No. 7 Montreat (N.C.) College 80-63 Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament.

The tournament is being played at Viking Hall in Bristol, Tenn.

Fowler (Morganfield, Ky.) went 11-of-13 from the field, including a 4-for-6 performance from 3-point range, in matching her season-high.

Also, sophomore Brooke Smith (Pineville, Ky.) set the single-season record for most point scored and most free-throws made. She netted 19 points and went 7-for-11 from the foul line to give her 736 points on the year and 183 free throws, surpassing the marks set by Amber Spencer. Spencer scored 725 points and made 180 free throws during the 1992-93 season.

Union struggled to get things going early on as Montreat (14-17 overall) jumped out to an 8-0 advantage and led by as much as nine (15-6) with 15:23 to play. Whitney Mace hit her first three 3-point attempts during the rally.

Little by little, Union clawed its way back and eventually taking a 29-28 lead with 6:26 to play. From that point on, Union never trailed.

Union finished the half on an 18-7 run to take a 43-35 halftime lead.

In the second half, Union steadily added to its advantage, eventually owning a 78-56 cushion.

In addition to Fowler and Smith, Susanna Todd (Eubank, Ky.) scored in double figures as she netted 11 points. Jessica Baker (Canmer, Ky.) dished out a career-high six assists.

For Montreat, Whitney Boone led the way with 12 points, while Mace added 11. Kim Staley chipped in 10 points.

With the victory, Union (23-8 overall) will now face Milligan (Tenn.) College in the semifinals Friday at 4 p.m. Milligan defeated Bryan (Tenn.) College 92-62 in its quarterfinal game.
