
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Johnnie Nabors and Andre Thornton qualified for their respective finals at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championship Friday. Nabors is among the Top 6 in the 60-meter dash and Thornton ran to a spot in the 200-meter finals.
The duo also tied or broke three school records during the day inside East Tennessee State University's Memorial Center.
Nabors, a 2007 NAIA Indoor All-American in the same event, was third in his semifinal and has secured another All-American nod. He ran the semifinal race in 6.82 seconds and finished third, but his time advanced him into the finals on Saturday at 1:25 p.m.
Nabors, a junior from Lawrenceville, Ga., currently has the fifth-fastest time entering Saturday. His semifinal effort ties the school record he set earlier in the season.
He reached the semifinals with a run of 6.88 seconds earlier Friday in a prelim race.
Thornton (Loganville, Ga.) broke another Union record in the 200-meter prelims with a 21.90 second run. He finished second in the prelim and secured his spot in the finals with the eighth and last spot. The 200-meter finals are scheduled to start at 2:40 p.m. He is one of eight finalists that will run in two races to determine the champion.
Doane (Neb.) College's Paulvince Obuon is the fastest of the finalist in both the 60 and 200 meter events. In the 60, he finished with a time of 6.74 seconds and owns a 21.50 second time in the 200.
The eight finalist in the 200 are separated by just .4 seconds. In the 60 meters, the half-dozen runners in the finals are within .09 seconds going into Saturday's championship.
Earlier in the day, Thornton just missed the 400 meter finals by 0.3 seconds after he posted a school-record time of 49.48 seconds. His time was good enough for the eighth fastest time in the event.
In the team standings, Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University leads the men's and women's standings. On the women's side, Azusa Pacific has 21 points, three in front of Wayland Baptist (Texas) University. Siena Heights (Mich.) University trails the Azusa Pacific men's team by two points entering Saturday.
