SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Union College sophomore Brooke Smith made history again Tuesday as she became the first player in program history to be named to the NAIA Women's Basketball Division II All-American Team, landing on the Third Team.
The NAIA announced the All-American Team during halftime of the National Championship Game between Northwestern (Iowa) College and the College of the Ozarks (Mo.) Tuesday.
Union has had three players earn NAIA All-American honorable mentions - most recently Chasity Nunn during the 2003-04 season. However, Smith (Pineville, Ky.) is the first Lady Bulldog to make the All-American Team.
In fact, Smith joins Ernest Trosper as the only student-athletes in Union basketball history to make the NAIA All-American Team. The Union men's basketball team has had seven players earn All-American honorable mentions while Trosper making the All-American Team in 1954-55.
Smith had a record-setting season in guiding Union to a share of the Appalachian Athletic Conference reguarl-season championship, the conference tournament title and a berth to the NAIA Division II National Championship Tournament.
The 6-foot forward/center set the single-season records for points (778), field goals made (287) and free throws made (188). On Dec. 29, Smith set the single-game records for points (54) and field goals made (20) in a 127-116 victory over Berea (Ky.) College.
Only a sophomore, Smith ranks fifth on the Lady Bulldogs' all-time scoring list with 1,357 career points and sixth on the all-time rebounding list with 471 boards. She also has 110 career blocked shots to her credit.
With a 22.88 points-per-game average, Smith ended the season ranked third in NAIA Division II in scoring. In addition, she was 10th in field-goal percentage (.558) and 24th in blocked shots per game at 1.912.
This honor is just the latest in a long list of awards Smith has garnered this season. She was named the AAC Player of the Year as well as All-AAC First Team. Smith was also named to the AAC All-Tournament Team, the Academic All-Conference Team, twice named the AAC Player of the Week and once the NAIA Division II Player of the Week.
Union finished the year 25-9 overall, tying the program record for wins. Union landed at No. 25 in the final NAIA Division II Poll, marking the first time in program history it ended the season ranked.
