
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - No. 16 Union College got its offensive working on all cylinders Monday as it cranked out 11 runs on 17 hits in an 11-2 victory over visiting NCAA Division III Spalding (Ky.) University.
The 11 runs surpass Union's output in its previous four games during which Union amassed only nine runs. Union went 2-2 during that four-game stretch.
With the victory, Union improved to 24-6 overall, while Spalding dropped to 4-13.
Union returns to action Tuesday when it plays host to University of Cincinnati Clemont (Ohio) at 3 p.m.
Lance Dougherty (Canyon, Texas) pitched a solid seven innings in collecting the win. The left-handed junior gave up two runs on eight hits and three walks and fanned three in upping his record to 5-0 on the year.
The entire pitching staff did a good job keeping Spalding at bay. While it rapped out 11 base hits, Spalding stranded 12 runners on base.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the third, Union began to pull away with a three-run fourth. With two on and one out, David Fairbanks (Cincinnati, Ohio) laced a triple into right field to give Union a 3-0 lead. Fairbanks then scored on Levi Hardin's (Elizabethtown, Ky.) sac fly as Union took a 4-0 advantage.
Spalding pushed a run across in the fifth when Shawn Thompson reached safely on a bunt single, allowing Brad Blackburn to score.
Union reeled off three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the margin to 7-1. Justin Hart (Lake Mary, Fla.) and Josh Ehringher (Somerset, Ky.) each had a RBI double during the rally, and Trey Wheeler (Hopkinsville, Ky.) chipped in a run-scoring single.
Nick Jewell lined a RBI double in the top of the sixth, pulling Spalding within 7-2. However, Union produced another three-run rally to extend the margin to 10-2. Lioney Henriquez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) roped a two-run single to left, while Joe Grinstead (Bowling Green, Ky.) scored on a throwing error to make it an eight-run contest.
Grinstead completed the scoring in the seventh with a run-scoring single to center, alloiwng Hardin to score easily from second.
Kenny Kysar (Corbin, Ky.) joined Ehringer and Grinstead in going 3-for-5 from the plate. Kysar scored twice, while Ehringer and Grinstead each scored once and drove in a run. Henriquez picked up three RBIs to give him a team-leading 30 RBIs on the season.
