
DURHAM, N.C. – The Union College 1,600-meter relay team broke the school record Saturday at the Duke University Asics Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Johnnie Nabors (Lawrenceville, Ga.) ran the first leg and handed off to Scotty Barnes (Ewing, Va.). Marekus Smith (Lithonia, Ga.) was Union's third leg and gave way to Andre Thornton (Loganville, Ga.) for the anchor leg. The quartet posted a time of three minutes and 23.41 seconds, three seconds better than the old record.
Earlier in the day, Thornton posted a Top-10 finish in the 200-meter dash with a run of 21.95 seconds. Nabors won his section of the 200 with a time of 22.23 seconds.
In the 100-meter dash, Thornton had the fifth fastest time overall with a 10.96 seconds performance while Nabors was eighth with an 11.00 second run. Smith also ran the event and finished in 11.46 seconds.
Daniel Kual (Stone Mountain, Ga.) ran to a time of 2:02.68 in his 800 meter race. In the 110-meter hurdles, Barnes completed the event in 19.94 seconds.
Union will be a part of the Sea Ray Relays starting Wednesday in Knoxville, Tenn. The Sea Ray Relays runs through Friday and on Saturday, Union will travel to Williamsburg, Ky. for the University of the Cumberlands Invitational.
