BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – An outstanding performance from Sarah Driver helped Union College to a 7-1 win to start the Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader with King (Tenn.) College at home Saturday. However, the second game went to the visitors, 6-1.

After the doubleheader, Union owns a 14-24 record overall and 5-5 in conference play while King went to 6-6 in the AAC and 17-20 overall.

Driver, a right-handed pitcher from Hopkinsville, Ky., evened her record at 10-10 with a complete game victory in the opener. She struck out 10 and only allowed one run on two hits. The two hits allowed ties a season-best for the right-handed pitcher. Drive also twice in a 1-for-4 performance with one RBI.

A four-run first inning gave Union the momentum. The next inning saw Ashley Tatman (Lexington, Ky.) hit a two-run home run to extend the lead. It was her team-high fourth long ball of the season and Driver was on base at the time.

King had an opportunity to make a dent into Union's lead during the third inning. The Tornado was able to load the bases with no outs and the Lady Bulldogs worked out of the jam. The first out was recorded at home on a fielder's choice from Brittany Lemons (Harriman, Tenn.) to Bethany Outland (Hopkinsville, Ky.) and then Driver struck the next two batters out.

The fifth inning saw Missy Campbell (Baltimore, Ohio) singled up the middle and Suzannah Behnken (Tempe, Ariz.) accounted for Union's seventh run.

King scored once in the sixth inning with a RBI groundout off Emily Bennett's bat that allowed Kara Faidley to come home.

Lyla Blauser (Hopkinsville, Ky.), Campbell and Behnken all had two hits apiece. Behnken scored twice with a double while Blauser stole a base.

Faidley and Tiffany Daniels were the only two King batters to get a hit off Driver. Ashley White tossed six innings and gave up seven runs on ten hits. Only two of White's runs were earned runs as the King defense committed four errors.

The second game was scoreless for the first two and a half innings until Union scored in the bottom of the third. With the bases full of Lady Bulldogs and two outs, Behnken's ground ball was fielded by Faidley and her toss was dropped by Whitney Tweed at first base. On the play, Sherry DeVault (Baltimore, Ohio) scored the first run of the contest.

King was able to load the bases during the sixth inning and came away with a two-run lead. The game-tying run came on a bases-loaded walk to Daniels and Tweed scored. The next two runs came in on a single from Samantha Watts.

The seventh inning saw King take advantage for another three runs.

DeVault went the distance in the losing effort. She gave up six runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Driver and Tatman both went 2-for-4 with the bat.

Amanda Crumpler and Shannon Henry had a pair of hits each for King. Chelsea Osborne threw a complete game for the win. She scattered 10 hits and gave up one unearned run.

Union will make the trip to Campbellsville (Ky.) University for another set of games Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. against the Mid-South Conference foe.
