BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Union College's softball team needed a 4-1 second-game victory to earn a split against Covenant (Ga.) College in a home Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday. Covenant took the opener with a score of 6-1.

After the doubleheader, Union went to 15-25 overall and 6-6 in the AAC. Covenant owns an 11-21 record and 8-4 conference mark.

Sherry DeVault (Baltimore, Ohio) might have scattered nine hits, but she only gave up one run in the second contest. She struck out five over the seven innings for the win.

She also drove in the first run of the game with a second-inning double. DeVault added another double in her sixth multi-hit game of the season.

Union added two more runs in the fourth inning behind a double from Sarah Driver (Hopkinsville, Ky.) Lee Davis (Lexington, Ky.) added a solo home run in the fifth inning. It was her second home run of the season.

Ashley Tatman (Lexington, Ky.) followed her 2-for-4 game-one performance with another two-hit effort in the second game.

The lone Covenant run came in the top of the fifth. Kristen Walker's single allowed Claire Settle to make the score 3-1 at that point.

Laura Moore suffered the loss for Covenant after she completed 4 1/3 innings. She allowed four runs, three earned, on six Union hits. Laura-Ashley Cloud had a game-best three hits while Kim Cuticchia and Walker had two hits each.

In the opening game, Covenant scored a pair when Cloud doubled to left field. The visitors added four insurance runs in the seventh frame.

It took until the sixth inning before Union could score and it was when Davis scored on a wild pitch.

Driver went the distance and gave up six runs on six hits. She also struck out six.

Moore threw seven innings and allowed one run and mixed in 10 strikeouts. She also helped herself out with two RBIs. Cuticchia had a pair of hits and scored twice while Walker also scored two runs.

Both teams collected six hits each, but the Lady Bulldogs left nine runners on base.

Union stays in the conference with a trip to Bluefield (Va.) College Thursday. The first game starts at 2 p.m.
