
BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Union College softball pitching staff combined for two shutouts, 11-0 and 9-0, Thursday on the road at Bluefield (Va.) College in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.
Sophomore Sarah Driver (Hopkinsville, Ky.) only allowed two hits and struck out five in the first game. Driver and the Lady Bulldogs only needed five innings for the victory to start the day. Her only hit of the game was a double.
The second-game belonged to Sherry DeVault (Baltimore, Ohio) and she matched Driver with only two hits allowed. DeVault also set down 11 Bluefield batters via strikeout which is a new season high for the freshman. She also delivered at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort which included a triple.
The Lady Bulldogs' bats also made a statement with 28 hits in the two games.
Suzannah Behnken (Tempe, Ariz.) became the first Lady Bulldog to hit a grand-slam home run and her five RBIs ties the school record in the opening game. The last Lady Bulldog to record five RBIs in a game was Kaila McSpedon, current Union assistant coach. McSpedon acomplished the feat on April 25, 2007, versus King (Tenn.) College. Behnken finished with a 3-for-4 performance.
Lyla Blauser (Hopkinsville, Ky.) was a perfect 3-for-3 with the bat and stole two bases in the contest.
The duo of Mallory Lavoy (Temperance, Mich.) and Lee Davis (Lexington, Ky.) both recorded 2-for-4 games to start the day.
Andrea Green (Frankfort, Ky.) became the latest Lady Bulldog to have four hits in a game in the final contest. Ashley Tatman (Lexington, Ky.) went 2-for-4 while Behnken only had one hit, but it was a triple.
The wins improved Union's record to 8-6 in the conference and 17-25 overall. Bluefield owns an 1-11 AAC mark with an overall record of 3-20.
Next on the schedule are the final two AAC games of the season. Union makes the trip to Virginia Intermont College Saturday and the first contest is set for a 2 p.m. start.
