
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – No. 13 Union College suffered a 15-2 setback Sunday against Montreat (N.C.) College in a non-conference baseball contest at Jerry W. Carey Stadium on Senior Day for the Bulldogs.
Senior David Fairbanks (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored on a single from Dustin Thrasher (Somerset, Ky.) in the seventh inning to make the final score 15-2. Fairbanks advanced to second after a failed pickoff attempt. He reached base with a single into right field.
The first Bulldog run came in the opening inning on a Joe Grinstead (Bowling Green, Ky.) single as Kenny Kysar (Corbin, Ky.) scored from second. Kysar reached on a walk and stole second.
Montreat made a statement early with five first-inning runs. The Cavs added seven more in the fourth. Two more runs were posted on the scoreboard in the fifth with a final score in the sixth.
At the plate, Matt Brady, a senior from Louisville, Ky., extended his hitting streak to five games with a 1-for-3 effort. Grinstead added another hit in his 21st multi-hit game of the season. Brett Nuss (Lake Mary, Fla.) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.
For the Cavs, Patrick Ballew went all seven innings and gave up two run on five Union hits. He recorded 10 strikeouts and issued two walks.
Eight of Montreat's starters recorded a hit with Brent Ashbaugh led the way with a 4-for-5 performance. The trio of Jesse Wise, Justin Cockrell and Dustin Bartlett recorded three-hits a piece. Ashbaugh and Steven Hoyle scored three times a piece as well. Chris Allen drove in four runs to lead the Cavs in that category.
After the game, Union moved to 35-11 on the year while Montreat left Barbourville with a 32-14 record.
Next on the schedule is a trip to Alice Lloyd (Ky.) College on Tuesday. The nine-inning game is set for a 4 p.m. start.
