
KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Union College junior Marty Popham has been a force to be reckon with on the mound all season, and now he has been honored for his efforts as he earned Appalachian Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year honors, the league announced Wednesday.
In addition, three other Bulldogs made the All-Appalachian Athletic Conference Team. Joining Popham (Louisville, Ky.) were second baseman Lioney Henriquez (Brooklyn, N.Y.), shortstop Joe Grinstead (Bowling Green, Ky.) and outfielder Josh Ehringer (Somerset, Ky.).
It has been a record-setting season for the right-handed Popham. He has tied the single-season record for wins in a season with his 12-1 record. In addition, Popham has set the single-season record for shutouts (3) and strikeouts (92).
Popham owns a 1.93 earned-run average with eight complete games and has struck out 92 and walked 17 in 79.1 innings pitched. He leads the NAIA in wins and is ranked 16th and 18th in strikeouts per nine innings (10.44) and earned-run average, respectively.
Henriquez, a junior, has started 47 games and boasts a .320 batting average with 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 43 RBIs. He has also stole 29 bases in 30 attempts. Henriquez stole four bases in a game against Rochester (Mich.) College on Feb. 16. In addition, he had six assists in a game against UVa-Wise on April 12.
Grinstead, a junior, leads the team with a .444 batting average, ranking him 23rd in the NAIA. The 6-foot-2 shortstop also has 11 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 44 RBIS. Grinstead leads the team with 34 stolen bases and ranks 12th in the NAIA in stolen bases per game (0.708). He started off the season with a 15-game hitting streak and belted two home runs against Georgetown (Ky.) College on March 11. Defensviely, Grinstead had six assists against Covenant (Ga.) College on March 17.
Ehringer, a junior, is hitting .401 on the year and leads the team with 16 doubles, 11 home runs and 49 RBIs. His .746 slugging percentage is also tops on the Bulldogs. On the base paths, Ehringer has swiped 12 bases. On April 6, he belted two home runs in a game against Tennessee Wesleyan College, and he is the first Bulldog to hit 10 or more home runs in a season since Bubba Szary and Brandon Ketron hit 13 and 11 four-baggers during the 2004 campaign.
Union had four players make the Academic All-Conference Team. Making the squad were Matt Brady (Louisville, Ky.), Lance Dougherty (Canyon, Texas), Cory Estep (Harlan, Ky.) and Tyler Martin (Corbin, Ky.).
Union College is currently playing in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn.
