BRISTOL, Tenn.Mallory Lavoy recorded a season-high four hits in the first round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Softball Tournament Wednesday, but it was her last hit that gave Union College a 3-2 win over King (Tenn.) College.

Lavoy, a junior from Temperance, Mich., drove in pinch-runner Ashleigh Mensch (Elizabethtown, Ky.) with her seventh-inning single to centerfield. It was the second RBI of the game. The first tied the game in the third inning as Lee Davis (Lexington, Ky.) scored.

Union, the tournament's No. 3 seed, improved to 20-25 and await the winner between second-seeded UVa-Wise and Virginia Intermont College. The winners will meet at 9 p.m. tonight at the Whitetop Creek Park Softball Complex.

The number 13 might be unlucky to some, but Sarah Driver (Hopkinsville, Ky.) picked up her 13th win of the season. She went the distance and struck out 10 Tornado batters. Driver allowed two runs, one earned run, on four hits and walked two.

The sixth inning saw Union leave the bases loaded. The three runners were among the 11 left on by the Lady Bulldogs. In comparison, King left four runners on bases.

The scoring started when King posted a pair of first-inning runs to gain the early advantage. Whitney Tweed singled into left field which allowed Shannon Henry and Amanda Crumpler to score.

Union cut into the deficit the next half inning when Driver scored off a Suzannah Behnken (Tempe, Ariz.) single.

Lyla Blauser (Hopkinsville, Ky.) had three hits while Behnken recorded two hits.

For King, Henry had half of the Tornado's four hits. Amanda White suffered the loss as she allowed 11 Union hits which turned into three runs. She walked two and did not record a strikeout.

Lady Bulldog Notes

  • The King game marked the fourth time Driver has recorded 10 or more strikeouts in a game this season.

  • The 11 hits was the 13th time in 2008 that Union has a double-digit hit total in a game.
