
NEW ALBANY, Ind. - Union College rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 5-4 victory over Mountain State (W.Va.) University Friday to stay alive in the NAIA Region XII Softball Tournament.
With the victory, Union (24-29 overall) advances to face UVa-Wise in the losers' bracket finale Saturday at 10 a.m. The winner will then face Indiana University Southeast at 12 p.m. for the region championship.
Mountain State ends the season 28-19 overall.
Down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Lyla Blauser (Hopkinsville, Ky.) led off the bottom of the seventh with a bloop double down the left-field line, just out of the grasp of shortstop Amber Lilly. Sarah Driver (Hopkinsville, Ky.) bunted her over, putting a runner on third with one out. With Ashley Tatman (Lexington, Ky.) up, Blauser scored on a wild pitch, tying the game at 4-4. Lee Davis (Lexington, Ky.) singled and Ashley Eichelberger (Orangevale, Calif.) reached on a walk to put two on with two outs. Then, Ashleigh Mensch (Elizabethtown, Ky.) hit a fly ball to right, but Brittany Lantz dropped it for her third error of the game, allowing Davis to score and giving Union the 5-4 victory.
Mountain State jumped out to the early advantage as Lilly led off the game with a double down the left-field line. She came around to score thanks to a pair of wild pitches, giving Mountain State a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, Blauser led off with a bunt single. Driver attempt to bunt Blauser over, but she reached safely as first baseman Samantha Daniels couldn't handle the throw. Blauser ended up scoring as right-fielder Lantz threw the ball away, tying the game at 1-1.
Errors plagued Union in the top of third as two miscues resulted into two unearned runs for Mountain State. Lilly and Lauren Howell each picked up RBIs in the inning, lifting Mountain State to a 3-1 lead.
Union got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame. Tatman reached on a three-base error when Lantz dropped a fly ball in right. Two batters later, Eichelberger lined a two-out single to right-center to score Tatman, making it a 3-2 contest.
In the fifth, Union evened the score at 3-3 when Tatman doubled to left center, driving Driver in from first.
Mountain State reclaimed the lead in the sixth when Anna Kincaid belted a two-out, solo home run over the centerfield wall, making it 4-3.
But then Union made an amazing seventh-inning comeback to pick up the 5-4 victory.
Blauser led Union at the plate in going 3-for-4 with two run scored, while Sherry DeVault (Baltimore, Ohio) went 2-for-3.
Driver picked up the victory, allowing four runs - two earned, on three hits and one walk with nine strikeouts.
For Mountain State, Lilly had two of the team's three hits and scored two runs.
