BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Maria Esswein has signed to continue her swimming career with the Union College Lady Bulldogs' program.

Esswein, a Perryville, Mo. native, is the latest signee for Union head coach Rafael Forti.

She swam at St. Vincent DePaul High School for her father and coach John Esswein. While at St. Vincent DePaul, she was a three-time team MVP. She added conference championships in the 100-yard butterfly twice. Maria also swam to all-conference status in 200 individual medley, 100 and 50 freestyle. She also was a part of the all-conference 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.

She was also a part of the Gator Swim Team under the direction of Steve Franklin.

To go with her swimming accomplishments, she was a member of the National Honor Society.

"I am glad to have Maria joining our program," Forti said. "She has proven to be an asset for St. Vincent DePaul academically and the swimming program. I have no doubts she will do the same at Union."

The Lady Bulldogs finished 21st at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championship in February.
