KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Union College junior hurler Marty Popham capped a record-setting season with NAIA All-American First Team honors, the NAIA announced Friday.

Popham (Louisville, Ky.) is joined by a pair of teammates on the squad as juniors Josh Ehringer (Somerset, Ky.) and Joe Grinstead (Bowling Green, Ky.) received All-American Honorable Mentions.

The All-America Teams consist of 17 members on the First Team, 17 on the Second Team and an Honorable Mention Team, which is limited to 34 players. The HM Team is not position-specific.

Popham is only the second Bulldog in program history to make the All-American First Team, joining Rick White who made the team in 2002. Union has had two Second Team All-Americans in Chris Beggs (1999) and Bryan Heaston (2002). With the addition of Ehringer and Grinstead, Union has had 15 players to earn honorable mentions.

In 2008, Popham rewrote the Bulldog record book as he led the NAIA in wins with a 17-1 overall record. The right-hander posted a 2.27 earned-run average and set seven single-season records. The marks Popham set were for wins (17), games started (18), complete games (12), shutouts (3), innings pitched (123.0), strikeouts (133) and winning percentage (.944 with a 17-1 record).

In addition to the single-season records, Popham also holds the career marks for shutouts (4), fewest walks allowed with at least 100.0 innings pitched (56 walks in 195.0 innings) and winning percentage (.852 with a 23-4 record).

During the season, Popham was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week four times and the NAIA Region XII Pitcher of the Week twice while also earning Appalachian Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, All-Conference First Team and All-NAIA Region XII First Team honors.

Ehringer led the team with 12 home runs and tied for the team lead in RBIs with 60. Boasting a .332 batting average, the Bulldog rightfielder lined 21 doubles, scored 63 runs, had a .606 slugging percentage and stole 15 bases.

During the season, Ehringer recorded an 11-game hit streak and had 18 multi-hit games and 14 multi-RBI games.

Ehringer earned a spot on both the First Team All-Conference and First Team All-NAIA Region XII squads.

Grinstead posted the second highest batting average in program history as he batted .433. He became the second player in program history to amass 90-plus hits as he lined 91. The Bulldog shortstop set the single-season record for runs scored (78) and tied the mark for stolen bases (46). He is also one of five players to play in a 65 games this year.

In addition, Grinstead recorded career highs in 2008 for doubles (18), triples (4), 10 home runs and RBIs (59). Grinstead opened the season with a 15-game hit streak and led the team with 33 multi-hit games to go along with his 12 multi-RBI contests.

Grinstead was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Week on March 3 as well as First Team All-Conference and First Team All-NAIA Region XII.

Union made its first-ever appearance in the NAIA World Series, finishing tied for fifth. The Bulldogs matched the program record for wins in going 48-18 overall. Union placed second in the Appalachian Athletic Conference during the regular season and tournament but won the NAIA Region XII Tournament and NAIA South Central Super Regional.
